History: In 1820
when the Royal wives of two reigning Hawaiian chiefs were invited aboard a ship named The Thaddeus and taught how to quilt
by the first group of missionaries that came to the islands. Hawaiian women were taught to cut the material into patchwork
squares and sew them back together. Hawaiians found this very confusing, as they could not understand cutting up material
just to sew it back together, and a waste of precious material. They were raised never to waste anything. Also they found
quilting confusing as the weather in Hawaii never got cold enough to use a quilt. Soon the Hawaiians adapted
quilting to their own unique style by using designs that they had created on tapa cloth. The Hawaiian women cut out their
designs using only one piece of fabric. They came up with designs which reflected their environment, their culture and heritage.
Hawaiian quilting encompasses a complete philosophy, spiritualism and passing on of tradition that is important in the Hawaiian
culture. Each design has significance and there is symbolism in each of the patterns. The quilts reflect the religious beliefs
of old Hawaii.
